Sfakaki
is one of the lesser known villages along the bay of
Rethymnon
on the Greek island of
Crete
in the Mediterranean Sea.
Many tourists do however know the name, as here the Old National Road underpasses the New National Road from Rethymnon to Iraklion, and there are even two highway junctions named "Sfakaki".

Actually, Sfakaki is not really a genuine village.
There is admittedly a small church by the road to Pagalohori, but a real village square does not exist.
In the East there is a not too deep gorge with a creek inside which dries out during the summer:
That is the border between Sfakaki and the much bigger neighbouring village of
Stavromenos.

In the West there is another creek which also runs dry during the summer, and marks the border of
Pigianos Campos.
In between there are some hills, and during recent years some lanes and a number of houses have been built on and between those hills.
Among others there are private detached single-family homes and apartment facilities.

Since some years there are also some lovely holiday villas which can be hired by the week.

Down by the beach on the other side of the National Road there is also a bigger hotel, the
Dedalos Beach,
as well as some apartment houses.
The finest sandy beach is the one at Dedalos Beach Hotel, and there is also a beach bar.
Some small business enterprises spread between the hills, such as an auto body shop, a beverage wholesale trade, and a market garden.

By the Old National Road on the sea side there are two tavernas and a supermarket, and on the land side there is a street cafe, a one-line shop for party accessories, a cabinet and door maker's, and a motorcycle dealer.
There is a Souvlaki stand with a mini taverna and an attached mini market on the land side by the lane that runs parallel to the New National Road, and they even sell inflatable water toys.

A much bigger number of shops is located in the neighbouring village of Stavromenos:
There are 3 supermarkets, 2 butcher's shops, a bakery, 2 tavernas, a grill stand, a pharmacy, a ladies' hairdresser and barber, a photo shop, an internet cafe, a gas station, and many others.
